See It All Seattle

From Land or Sea The Christmas Ships™ Are a Sight to Behold

Nov 08, 2018

The holiday season is a time of gathering in celebration, and enjoying the beauty that surrounds us. There is not much more lovely than the glimmer of the lights of the Christmas Ships™ reflecting on the Puget Sound.  This holiday tradition dating back to 1949, lead by Argosy Cruises is a sight for the young and old. Every year from late November through the days just before Christmas, ships take to the waters adorned with holiday decorations, beautiful twinkling lights and holiday music fills the air.

The Argosy website offers three ways to enjoy the Christmas ships this season:

The Lead Boat Experience

Hop aboard the official Christmas Ship™, the Spirit of Seattle. This festive holiday cruise features fellow shipmates Santa Claus AND a choir on board throughout the entirety of the 2-3 hour cruise.  Have your picture taken with Santa, enjoy life performances, a reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, holiday crafts and activities for the little ones, and a full bar with snacks available for purchase.

The Follow Boat Experience

From the Follow Boat, you’ll get a boat’s-eye-view of the Christmas Ship™ as you follow her to each performance.  Enjoy boarding photographs with Santa, a broadcast performance of the choir performance going on live on the Lead Boat, kids’ holiday craft bags, and a full bar with snacks available for purchase on this 2-3 hour cruise.

Check it out from the shore

Shore sighting experiences abound throughout this sparkling holiday season. Check out the Christmas Ships™ schedule here and enjoy up close views of the Christmas Ship™ and Follow Boats, hear the sound of the live choir performance broadcast from aboard the Christmas Ship™, warm up by onshore community bonfires (available at some locations) along with lightings or special events that vary depending upon location.

 Other things to note:

  • Make your plans in advance, many dates and cruises quickly sell out.
  • A portion of all Christmas Ship™ Festival Proceeds are donated to The Seattle Times Fund for the Needy.
  • Want a special experience for the little ones? It’s all kids on deck for the Christmas Ship™ Kid Cruise featuring dancing and singing with Recess Monkey!
  • The Christmas Ship™ Parade of Boats takes place Friday, December 14th from 7-9:30pm from Lake Union Park and features the Lead and Follow boats along with hundreds of other decorated vessels joining the parade!
