Looking for something (and FREE!) to do on those September weekends? Look no further than Seattle Center’s Festál Cultural Festivals. Now in its 21st season, Festál is a chance to bring people together in a time when people seem to be drifting further and further apart. This yearlong celebration of community highlights the festivities of a multitude of different cultures.
This year’s theme is generations, which is a move to “intentionally build bonds between age groups that creatively foster identity, respect and honor.” All performances are held at Seattle Center and include a mix of music, dance, exhibits, food, and family-friendly activities.
Here’s what Festál has in the works this September:
Live Aloha Hawaiian Cultural Festival: September 9, 2018
Experience the beauty of Hawaii in the heart of Seattle! The Live Aloha Hawaiian Cultural Festival will dive deep into the historic roots and more modern influences of Hawaii through hula, mele, and Hawaiian music- including 2018 headliner Ho’Aikane. Celebrating what it means to “live aloha” the festival will also include delicious Hawaiian food and lei making workshops.
Seattle Fiestas Patrias: September 15-16, 2018
Commemorating the independence of Latin American countries, Seattle Fiestas Patrias is a fiesta like no other! At this celebration of the Latino community in the Pacific Northwest, partygoers have the opportunity to enjoy Latin-American fare, mariachi, dance, karaoke and folklore. The festival will also feature free health screenings for cholesterol and glucose levels.
The Italian Festival: September 28-29, 2018
Now in it’s 31st year the Italian Festival is one the entire family will love! This festival is based on the fundamentals of Italy: “God, family, community and a love of this country mixed with nostalgia from the old country that was home to our Italian ancestors.” With mouth-watering food (including cooking demos), wine tasting, gorgeous old world music and family fun (including the infamous pizza toss), the Italian Festival will surely become something you look forward to each year.
